A man was killed when the light motor vehicle he was travelling in was struck by a train at a level crossing on Jan Van Riebeeck Street in Pretoria North this evening.
The cause of the accident and the series of events leading up to it remain uncertain and will form the subject of a South African Police Force investigation.
Common cause information suggests that the man had attempted to cross the line and was struck by the goods train. The freight train pushed the vehicle for nearly two hundred meters before coming to rest.
Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene to find the man’s body heavily entrapped in the wreckage. He had sustained critical injuries and had sadly died as a result. The man was declared dead and firefighters used the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic rescue equipment to free it.
Traffic on both the road and rail line was adversely affected. Delays are expected.
