City ecstatic that the stricken Japanese longliner has been removed

At 15:47 the stricken Eihatsu Maru, a Japanese longliner that ran aground near Clifton on Saturday 12 May 2012, has successfully been removed from the sandbank. The salvage team has had to overcome numerous challenges in order to effect this successful operation.

The City of Cape Town is exceptionally pleased to have the vessel removed from Clifton 1st Beach.

The City is also pleased that the entire operation did not cause any environmental degradation, nor pollution to the shoreline; as well as being delighted at the successful cooperation amongst all government agencies involved in this major procedure.

The City thanks the South African Maritime Authority (SAMSA) and the contracted salvaging companies, Atlatech Pty. Ltd. and SMIT Amandla Marine, for their expertise and tireless efforts to remove the vessel.

The Japanese embassy should also be lauded for their efforts in securing the owner of the vessel’s cooperation with South African authorities.

The vessel has been taken to Quay 500 at the Port of Cape Town where an inspection will be conducted. The remaining crew members will also be interviewed.

The Customs Division of the South African Revenue Services (SARS) and the Department of Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries will conduct inspections of the vessel and its cargo.
