Clifton trawler salvage operation suspended

The City’s disaster response teams together with the appointed salvage company reassembled at 16:00 today to execute the plan to recover the Eihatsu Maru long line fishing vessel, a Japanese ship, which ran aground at 5:15am on Saturday, 12 May 2012 in thick fog.

The vessel was operated by 28 Taiwanese crew members of whom 19 were evacuated. The remaining crew and captain will stay on-board the vessel as per the requirements of international maritime law.

The marine engineers reconsidered the fitting of a metal plate to the ship for towage, as it was deemed not conducive to effect the salvage of the vessel.

The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre conducted an aerial surveillance this afternoon to familiarise themselves with the conditions and to ensure that the necessary contingency arrangements are in place for any unforeseen event.

At 16:45 this afternoon a decision was taken to suspend the salvage operation due to unfavourable surf conditions that would have endangered the safe operation of the tug boats and the crew on-board.

The situation will be reassessed at first daylight tomorrow and to determine the course of action.
