Shelly Beach Windsurfer rescued


Following eye-witness reports of a windsurfer appearing to be in difficulty a nautical mile off Orange Rocks, Uvongo, Shelly Beach duty crew were called out at 12h41 on Sunday 13th May NSRI.

The Shelly Beach duty crew launched Caltex Challenger and in a 10 knot North Easterly wind and a light half a meter swell responded to the scene. On arrival the windsurfer was seen by our crew getting up on his board and sailing for a few feet before falling off again.

According to Mark Harlen, NSRI Shelly Beach station commander, 66 year old Andre Purnell from Izotha, Port Shepstone was rescued, 1.5 nautical miles out to sea and his windsurfer was recovered.

Andre was dehydrated and suffering from some motion sickness. After being treated at our sea rescue base we gave him a lift back to his car and he required no further assistance.
