Freak wave grabs chef and friend at Glentana

GEORGE NEWS - Well-known local chef and director of the Eden School of Culinary Art Carol Wicht and her friend Lydia Barrett had a very narrow escape from the sea near Glentana on Sunday after deciding against walking their dogs on the beach due to rough seas.

"We were still on the dry sand, but on looking at the sea, we decided it was not a good day for a walk. We had already turned away and were walking back among the rocks when a freak wave struck from nowhere and took us totally by surprise.

"Lydia was ahead of me and managed to keep her footing but I had stooped to pick up my dog and was drawn into the sea," Carol said.

"We want to thank our two guardian angels Cynthia and Philip Voigt who came to our rescue. If it were not for these two guardian angels we would not be here to thank them personally," Carol wrote in a thank you note which she asked the George Herald to include.

Neither of the women was injured except for bruises but Carol said the extreme force of the water drew off her wedding and eternity rings. The Mossel Bay station commander for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Dawie Zwiegelaar, said on Monday that he had noticed that the spring tide experienced on Sunday was exceptionally high and that the freak wave was possibly due to the tide.
