Garden Route: Eskom denies major damage

GEORGE NEWS FLASH - Contrary to recent reports and a public outcry, Eskom denies having caused any major environmental damage during the erection of their power towers in indigenous forest near Saasveld and at Wilderness Heights.

The towers form part of the upgrading of Eskom's power line between Blanco and Knysna.

The George Herald reported recently that construction had to be halted on the instructions of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF). A reliable source told the newspaper that there had been "reckless" and "unnecessary" environmental damage in these areas, which are protected under the National Forests Act.

In the meantime, the George Herald has also learned of the fury of a local invasive plant removal contractor regarding an indigenous tree of about 1 000 years old, that had allegedly been removed by Eskom.

In response to accusations of poor environmental planning and failure to obtain the required licences for the removal of indigenous vegetation, Eskom says in an official statement that a site meeting was held on 16 April to gain clarity on SANParks and DAFF's requirements.
