A minor earthquake in Swaziland has resulted in earth tremors being felt in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.

The quake struck just before 9pm last night and was felt in areas in Swaziland including Mankayane, Mangcongco and the capital city Mbabane.

Ian Saunders, from the Council for Geoscience, has confirmed that the original earthquake in Swaziland measured four on the Richter Scale.

Newswatch has spoken to several East Coasters who say they felt the tremors in Newcastle, Ladysmith, Dundee, Mkuze, Piet Retief and Pongola.

Aftershocks were also reportedly felt in the KZN Midlands.

Johan Peters from Newcastle says he felt the ground move a little under him for about a minute or so.

"I was at the airport here in Newcastle and I just felt all of a sudden some shivering going on, and I heard - it was like somebody running on the roof of the airport building," he said.

Another Newcastle resident, Steven Bezuidenhout, says his family also experienced the tremor.

"It was burglar guards rattling, roofs rattling, my sister - who lives around the corner from me - her burglar guards were rattling. They actually thought it was the wind at first, but my brother-in-law felt the ground shaking under his couch," he said.

The tremor was also felt in Mkuze in northern KZN.

"Our house and windows started suddenly rattling at 9pm. It only lasted a few seconds where we are," said Bronwen Kelly.
