The SA Weather Service has warned of wet and bitterly cold conditions throughout the country and issued a gale-force warning for the Western Cape.
On Sunday, there were reports of snowfall on mountains in Matroosberg near Ceres and the Hex River valley.
Gale-force north-westerly winds are expected between Cape Town and Cape Agulhas on Tuesday.
The weather service also warned of very cold conditions and snowfall in the Eastern Cape while bitterly cold conditions were expected in the Free State.
Rain is expected to dominate the City Bowl for the next two days, with 13mm on Tuesday and 1mm on Wednesday.
“Partly cloudy and cold but cool in the north-west. Light showers are expected along the south and south-west coast. The wind along the coast will be moderate north-westerly, but westerly along the south coast,” the SA Weather Service website reported.
Clear skies are expected on Thursday.
According to the Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve Facebook page: “Little bit of snow right at the summit last night, but not even Groothoek Kloof.
“So nothing worthwhile for driving all the way here just yet. But it’s nice and cold and the humidity is picking up nicely now.”
Elke Brouwers of the Cape Town weather office said they expected the cold conditions to subside from Tuesday.
She said very cold conditions would continue on the northern high ground of the Western Cape.
