Man impaled in Pretoria building

Johannesburg - A man was killed on Sunday afternoon in Pretoria after being impaled by iron rods in a disused building, Tshwane metro police said.

"It is suspected that the man had by-passed the security officers at the flats and was attempting to steal some iron or copper parts at the high-rise buildings situated in the west of the Tshwane CBD," spokesperson Console Tleane said in a statement.

The man, in his 30s, apparently slipped while on one of the upper floors of the Kruger Park building at about 17:30.

"He went down through to the bottom floor where he unfortunately landed on iron rods that pierced through his body," said Tleane.

The man was declared dead on the scene.

The building and the adjacent Schubart Park building, both owned by the City of Tshwane, are to be implosed after being found to be structurally unfit for habitation.

Police were investigating, Tleane said.
