Netcare911 Paramedics go the extra mile

"Freezing cold blustering wind surges through the broken windows, and firelight is all that illuminates the room. Those were the conditions in the dwelling in which Abraham Khumalo was born prematurely last week.

Netcare911 Paramedics Chandre Pretorius and Theo Khunou responded to a call for help when heavily pregnant mother Patricia went into labour on a farm in Lanseria.

Chandre and Theo arrived at the home to find that young Abraham had been delivered without incident in the informal dwelling. They examined the newborn and found him to be in good health, albeit having been born in freezing cold conditions.

They warmed the newborn and transported him, along with his mother to a nearby hospital.

Knowing that Abraham had been born into abject poverty, and that his mother barely had the means to feed and clothe herself, they decided to do more.

Enamoured, they spread the word among other paramedics within the Netcare911 base frame-work, they manage to gather baby clothes and food items worth thousands of (rands)Rands.

Today, they made the winding trek along the dirt track back to the informal dwelling to deliver their payload of essential items. Wrapped into a large blanket, baby Abraham Khumalo slept as Chandre and Theo handed the aid to an overwhelmed Patricia.

These men embody the values of Netcare911."
