City disaster response teams reach out to flood-stricken victims: nearly R1 million spent on relief efforts

CAPE TOWN – The City’s disaster response teams has reacted swiftly in response to the recent severe weather conditions that caused localised flooding in Cape Town.

The disaster response teams assisted 6,102 households that were affected by the inclement weather conditions that occurred in Cape Town since 26 June 2012.

Approximately R990,362.00 was spent on disaster relief efforts that was provided to 19,641 persons in various areas around the Cape Peninsula.

The amount spent was for the following social relief of distress provided to victims during heavy rains that caused discomfort:

R585,135.00
Hot Meals (supper)
R148,140.00
Brunch
R88,515.00
Food Parcels
R91,080.00
Flood Kits
R72,200.00

The monies spent are only for social relief of distress; and excludes costs relating to resources deployed, i.e. staff, plant, equipment, etc.

The relevant departments absorb costs relating to emergency repair work and mop up operations under its operating expenditure budgets.

Whilst the disaster response teams continue with mop up operations the weather forecast indicates persistent precipitation for the entire week.

On Monday, 09 July 2012, Mr Mike Marsden, the Acting City Manager, has called an urgent meeting with disaster response teams to review the situation following the heavy downpour over the past weekend.

The disaster response teams have been ordered to be on enhanced level of standby and to brace themselves for a very busy week.

The continuous rain has a potential to cause or threaten to cause nearby ponds and rivers to overflow; and could potentially result in discomfort for people living in low-lying areas.

The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre is further assisted by the Department of Social Development of the Western Cape Government and the South African Social Security Agency.
