Man dies in light aircraft crash near Groblersdal (9 July 2012)

One man has died and another is in a serious condition following a light aircraft crash near Groblersdal this afternoon.

ER24 paramedics received a call out to the R555 for what they believed to have been a motor vehicle collision. Upon arriving close to the scene the crew found that it was in fact a light aircraft which had crashed close to the road.

On further investigation the crew found that one of the occupants in the aircraft was still in the micro light and that the second occupant was sitting outside the aircraft. Shortly after initiating care to the man in the aircraft the man stopped breathing. Paramedics rapidly extricated the man, believed to be aged in his 60′s, from the wrecked aircraft before initiating resuscitation efforts. Unfortunately the man was later declared dead at the scene.

The other man had sustained suspected back, neck and chest injuries as well as a facial injury and broken bones to both legs. Paramedics treated the man on the scene before rapidly transporting him to a nearby medical facility for further care.

The incident will be investigated by the appropriate authority.
