A fire occurred at 20:54 on Sunday, 01 July 2012, at Village 1, Phakami Road, in Khayelitsha.
Fifteen shacks were gutted by the fire, leaving 60 people displaced.
All persons have been accounted for – no persons sustained injuries.
During the course of the morning the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre will be providing humanitarian relief aid in the form of food parcels, clothing, blankets and building material to the fire victims.
The cause of the fire is undetermined and the authorities will probe an investigation.
The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre appeals to residents to be careful when working with open flames. When going to sleep, residents should switch off electrical devices and extinguish gas burners, candles, lamps and paraffin stoves in order to prevent accidental fires.
