Johannesburg - About 70 military hand grenades were stolen on Wednesday near Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, Eyewitness News (EWN) reported.
The grenades were on the back of a bakkie at a petrol station on the N1. They were being transported to the Wallmansthal military base in Pretoria.
A police officer said they were searching for thieves who stole two crates containing 35 grenades each. Three crates were stolen. One was discovered in a nearby field.
Apparently the driver and his assistant arrived at the station at about 05:00 and were resting at the time of the robbery.
Police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said an official statement would be released soon.
