SEA RESCUE – Eerste River – Thursday, 05th July, 2012. Teenager missing

At 17h10 on the afternoon of Thursday, 05th July, NSRI Oyster Bay and NSRI St Francis Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crews were alerted following a request for assistance from police reporting 2 young men in difficulty in the surf at Eerste River Main Beach, near to the Tsitsikamma Nature Reserve, between Cape St Francis and Plettenberg Bay, on a remote stretch of coastline.

A 22 year old and a 19 year old, brothers, from Pretoria, were reportedly caught in a rip current while taking a late afternoon swim. The 22 year old managed to get ashore but his brother reportedly disappeared after approximately 10 minutes in the surf and has not been seen since.

Sea conditions are rough.

An NSRI Oyster Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew responded to the scene arriving after dark and joined police, the brother, a group of the brothers University friends (a group of friends that are reportedly on a University vacation together) and public members conducting shore patrols but no sign of the missing teenager has been found.

A police dive unit has been alerted from Port Elizabeth.

At this stage the teenager is missing.

The brothers parents, in Pretoria, are being kept abreast of developments.

Names are not being released at this stage.

Police will open an inquest docket.
