Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Acting Executive Director for Infrastructure and Engineering, Mr Barry Martin, shared the great news with a team of journalists that the 700mm in diameter steel pipe has been fixed before 6am this morning.
This comes after initial predictions on Thursday, when the two pipelines supplying water from the
Churchill/Impofu dams were washed away due to flooding, suggested that the restoration of water supply would take up to 5 days.
"This excellent development put us in a position to distribute water through the pipeline and could mean that water supply could be back to normal sometime tomorrow afternoon.
"We are extremely happy with the great team work displayed by municipal employees, contractors and the political leadership that enabled us to deal with this potentially critical situation with speed in order to the benefit of the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay," Mr Martin added.
Residents are reminded to use water sparingly and postpone the washing of laundry and other projects that will require the usage of large volumes of water tomorrow to allow for reservoirs to fill up.
Since the pipelines were washed away during the early morning on Thursday, workers worked day and night until the pipe was fixed this morning.
Mr Martin thanked them for their unwavering spirit and commitment to the well-being of the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay.
