The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

Fires kills 1 female adult and 2 female minors in Cape Town informal settlement
PHILLIPI: At 00:15 on Sunday, 05 August 2012 one (1) shack was destroyed by a fire at Cornflower Street, Phillipi-East. Two (2) female minors (8 and 9 years) died as a result and the circumstances regarding the incident are unconfirmed. The identity of the victims has not been made known. The SAPS has opened an inquest to investigate the incident.
NYANGA: At 02:50 on Sunday, 05 August 2012 a fire occurred at Siphaka Road, Lusaka Informal Settlement that destroyed six (6) shacks resulting in the displacement of 24 people. Nolutando Nozana (38 years) was declared fatal that could not escape the blaze. The SAPS has opened an inquest docket regarding the occurrence of the fire.
SEA POINT: At 06:24 on Sunday, 05 August 2012 a fire broke out in a flat at Ambassador Court situated in London Road. The three (3) occupants of the flat were evacuated to safety as a result of the blaze. Another flat where two (2) people reside sustained water damage as a result of the firefighting efforts. The swift response by the Fire & Rescue Services averted the fire to spread to the remainder of the building. The City’s building inspectorate will conduct an inspection during the course of this morning to establish whether the fire caused any structural damages. No persons sustained any injuries.
The City’s disaster response teams will be at hand during the course of the day to assist the fire victims with food parcels, clothing, blankets and building material.
