The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has been able to redirect water from the Loerie and Nooidgedacht systems to parts of Port Elizabeth affected by water supply cuts.
The city has been battling with water supply for the last few days after two main pipes burst. Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron says suburbs like Mangold Park and Newton Park, where Port Elizabeth's biggest Shopping Centre is situated, now have water.
He says work on the water supply pipeline is progressing well. "The only major set back we've had was this wide-spread panic in the Nelson Mandela Bay, resulting in people drawing too much water and by doing this, emptying the reservoirs. It seems like in the Mangold Park and Newton Park areas, some people heeded our call to use water wisely, which enabled us to restore water supply back to their area," says Baron.
Water tankers are meanwhile providing water to residents whose supply has not been restored. Bongani Ndedwa of New Brighton township says they are hoping the municipality will restore water before Tuesday.
He says: "We are struggling, so bad that even our pets are struggling. I've got two dogs and they do not have water to drink, and we haven't even washed for two days. You have to save water to cook instead of washing, so it is important."
