Landslide threatens Twini Hill

A LANDSLIDE on Twini Hill has endangered the home of the Neser family in Burne Road, Athlone Park.

The family was busy removing valuables, as the house is sitting on the precipice of a deep gully. Tons of mud has cascaded downhill to the N2 freeway bridge.

Trees have tumbled down and the family’s wendy house collapsed within an hour of the Sun visiting the site.

"I don’t know how to feel about the situation right now, I am too busy moving out. As long as my family and I have one another, we will be okay," said home owner, Frikkie Neser.

He attributed the disaster to non-maintenance of the storm water system. "The system not being maintained is part of the problem. It is worsened by people who pilfer in the bins on refuse collection days.

They store what they have collected in big bags in the storm water drains, causing further blockage," said Frikkie.
He said the storm three weeks ago was the start of the landslide and Tuesday night’s rain worsened the situation.

Frikkie was grateful for the help his family has received from the top management of the municipality. "Our furniture is being stored and we will be put up in a B&B for the next few days," he said.
He also thanked family and friends who have come to their aid.
