Ironically, according to uThukela, while half the town is flooded with storm water, Ladysmith taps will run dry.
uThukela District Municipality's Glen Singh just announced that a section of the Spioenkop pipeline that supplies Ladysmith with water has been partially washed away in the heavy rains.
This means that Ladysmith will effectively run out of drinking water sometime today or tomorrow.
Mr Singh explained that the earliest estimation of repairs to the line being completed is on Monday. Even after they repair the line, it will take some time for the reservoirs to fill.
The areas affected are van Riebeeck Park, Modelkloof, Limit Hill, Observation Hill and most of the so-called 'old Ladysmith' (Egerton, Hospital Park, Reservoir Hill, etc).
Areas supplied by Ezakheni will not be affected and some water from the Klip River will flow through, which will result in some low-lying areas still having water.
Damage to the line is estimated to run into the millions.
