Kuruman - At least 60 000 hectares of farming land have been completely destroyed by fires in the Kuruman-Kathu district in the Northern Cape.
Head of the Kuruman Fire Association, Danie Joubert, says all the land between the two towns were gutted by runaway veld fires, which started on Thursday. He says the fires are under control this morning, and if the wind doesn't become a factor today, they could be completely extinguished.
According to Joubert, only a few head of cattle were killed, however, all the wild animals in the area burnt to death. A car was the only property destroyed by the flames.
Joubert says only minor fire related injuries were reported among farmers and firefighters, but no-one was hospitalised.
Meanwhile, a third firefighting team was dispatched to Wolhuterskop near Bethlehem in the Free State where fires have been raging since yesterday (Sunday).
Working on Fire's Saayman Rossouw says it's difficult to estimate the damage at this stage.
