Assistance for Eden Disaster Management

Mr Gerhard Otto, Manager of Eden Disaster Management announced that Santam donated R900 000 to help with severe weather conditions.

GEORGE NEWS - The Eden District Municipality's Disaster Management received R900 000 from Santam in order to improve their effectiveness in reducing the impact of severe weather conditions that lead to disastrous repercussions.

The manager of Eden's Disaster Management Centre, Mr Gerhard Otto said at the last Eden Council meeting that this social responsibility by Santam actually makes both business and financial sense for the company.

"When municipalities are able to plan for and manage disasters, the insurance claims from such disasters are reduced, thus protecting the profit margins for the company."

Eden is one of five municipalities identified by Santam for financial support.

Otto said that Santam identified their key interest for disaster management, especially in storm water management and fire- fighting services, considering the high incidence of claims that they have to deal with in this regard.

"The assistance is both financial and human resource based."
