Cold-fronts SW-Cape 20 & 24-25 November 2012

At this time of year (early summer) an endless series of cold-fronts pass to the south of Cape Town. Occasionally a few brush the SW-Cape coast, though their effects are usually limited to light rain, and somewhat cooler temperatures. Below average temperatures are likely for most of this week (except for a heatwave on Fri 23rd), with a weak front passing on Tues 20th.

Several model runs (both GFS and NOGAPS up to 00Z on Sun 18th) show a strong second front passing on Sat 24th & Sun 25th, accompanied by a deep offshore low and sharp upper trough. This event is likely to bring strong winds and large swells (4-6m) at times over next weekend.

It is always difficult to give details this far in advance (6-7 days or 144-168 hours), but the SAWS forecast for Cape Town already has 4mm of rain for Sat 24th:

This forecast also shows a very sharp drop in temperature from 29C on Fri 23th, to 19C on Sat 24th!
