The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

Cape Town City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre Honours 16 Recipients
Sixteen Recipients of Macassar and Melton Rose Honoured for Voluntary Services and First Aid Certificates Awarded
Sixteen outstanding volunteers were honoured by the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre at a Volunteer Recognition Award Ceremony that took place on Saturday, 08 December 2012 at the Macassar High School.
Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, the Deputy Head of the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre, that was the Master of Ceremonies at the event honoured the volunteers for the many hours of dedication and achievement as qualified first-aiders.
Solomons-Johannes said “we are very fortunate to have a strong and dedicated team of volunteers in Macassar and Melton Rose of all ages who assist us in many vital ways – from fire fighting, traffic control, trauma counselling, performing duties at special events amongst other”.
The following volunteers were trained by the City’s Disaster Risk Management that has a registered training facility and certificates were issued to the following:

4. Shafdien Gaobone (20 years)
5. Carlin Faviers (29 years)
6. Alistair Engelbrecht (47 years)
7. Kyle Jacobs (20 years)
8. Jayson Adonis (22 years)
9. Pyron Isaacs (50 years)
10. Christolene Tobias (25 years)
11. Zakaria Samuels (19 years)
12. Jody Carelse (20 years)
Voluntary Service Awards
1. Andre Grove (45 years), Macassar Volunteer Unit Commander (15 years’ service award)
2. Franklin Tiemie, Volunteer in Melton Rose (15 years’ service)
3. Jacobus Fortuin, Volunteer in Melton Rose (15 years’ service)
4. Francois Samuels, Volunteer in Macassar (5 years’ service; Best Performing Volunteer and Volunteer of the Year)
Solomons-Johannes said “the volunteers of Macassar and Melton Rose demonstrated consistent commitment to volunteer service within their communities, and particularly supporting the Disaster Risk Management Centre creating a safe, security and caring city”.
“Volunteerism is ingrained in the culture of the community of Macassar and Melton Rose for many years, and as such is provided with a range of opportunities such as training in the field of: first aid; firefighting; communications; care and comfort; logistics and administration; maintenance; traffic control; etc.” said Solomons-Johannes.
