The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

Lightning kills boy near Mthatha, Eastern Cape (11 February 2013)
A 17-year-old boy died and a 16-year-old girl was injured when lightning struck them at Msintsane, near Mthatha, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.
The teenagers were caught in a thunderstorm on their way home on Monday, Lt-Col Mzukisi Fatyela said.
"The boy died and the girl is in a critical condition in hospital. She suffered burn wounds."
