At least five people are missing after the Tugela River burst its banks last night, flooding many homes in the Msinga area near Greytown. Search and rescue efforts are underway.
Cooperative Governance MEC Nomusa Dube is expected to lead Disaster Management teams through affected communities today.
Her spokesperson Lennox Mabaso says they will be taking stock of the damage to see how they can assist those affected by the storm:
"A severe thunderstorm tore through parts of Msinga leaving a trail of destruction," he said.
"We spent a sleepless night trying to provide temporary shelter to the victims."
