The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

Injury onboard high speed boat
KNYSNA Friday 13th January 2012.
At 14h45 on Friday 13th January Knysna sea rescue duty crew were called out for a man injured onboard a high speed rigid inflatable boat, KNYSNA RIB ADVENTURES, 1.5 nautical miles off the Knysna Heads in a confused 3 meter choppy sea swell.
Our NSRI volunteers launched COLORPRESS RESCUER and on arrival David Burdett, 47, from Sussex, England, who is on holiday in South Africa with family, was treated for a lower back injury. He was fully immobilized onto a trauma board, transferred onto our sea rescue craft and brought to our NSRI rescue base, before being transported to hospital in a ER 24 ambulance in a stable condition.
It has been confirmed by the hospital that Mr. Burdett has suffered a fracture of a lower spinal vertebrae.
