The National Sea Rescue Institute on Tuesday said it is shocked and infuriated by the behaviour of some people towards its officials patrolling beaches.
On Monday NSRI rescuers in KwaZulu-Natal who were trying to launch a boat to search for a man who disappeared while swimming, were intimidated and threatened by beach goers.
The reason for the incident is unclear.
The NSRI’s Craig Lambinon said, “The crowd became aggressive to the point where the police felt the NSRI volunteers’ safety was being compromised.”
He condemned the incident.
“It is unusual to experience something like that. The NSRI were taken by surprise,” he added.
