JOHANNESBURG - Environmental group Greenpeace said on Monday, the South African government and energy giant Eskom will drastically exacerbate the country’s water shortages through its continued dependence on coal-fired power.
The group is releasing a new report about the hidden water cost of coal and is lobbying for government to reconsider its energy strategy.
Greenpeace said South Africa has some of the best quality water resources in the world but still, a water crisis looms.
It is projected that there is a gap between water supply and demand for the next 20 years.
The construction of the Kusile and Medupi power stations could tax resources even further.
Greenpeace’s Melita Steele said, “The reality is that Eskom is a strategic water user, which means they get water no matter what.”
Steele said they want the parastatal and the government to be more openly accountable to the public and openly invest more in renewable energy.
