Kwazulu Natal: Landslide cuts off SPCA

The torrential rain has resulted in a landslide, which has made the Amanzimtoti SPCA on Nyati Road inaccessible by road.

The problem was discovered early this morning when staff tried to get there.

The 80 or so animals at the facility are safe, but deputy manager Tracy Girling says no sooner is the road cleared by municipal graders than more soil is washed down the hill.

"But really, the rain is just coming down and that sand is just coming down as quickly as they move it, it's coming down again. It's going to take them along time to remove all that sand, but they are doing their best on the long route round; they are trying clear that," she said.

Two staff members managed to access the SPCA via the freeway side, climbing over the train tracks and then scaling the SPCA wall.

They've fed and watered the animals and have ensured they're all warm. Girling says they'll have to access the facility the same way tomorrow, as the animals will need to be attended to.

Meanwhile, a house on Twini Hill is also reportedly at risk of being affected.

"She (her colleague) was speaking to one of the construction guys and they said that they were keeping a close eye on one of the houses above us. I don't know exactly which house it is, I think it's in Burne Road and possibly it might come down. Let's hope it doesn't," she said.

  1. Land slide in Amanzimtoti. My fence is heading downhill to the ocean. Who can we call for assistance. Broken pipe needs to be fixed to stop water eroding the sand and causing more land sliding.
